Welcome to your career wiki! Each of you will have a page to record all of the great information you find out about your chosen career.
Before deciding on your final career, you'll need to do a little research on what you can expect from those careers. Use the following sites to get basic information on your chosen career:
http://www.bls.gov/ooh/ This is the Occupational Outlook Handbook created and maintained by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. You should be able to find all of the information you need about your careers here.
http://www.ncwiseowl.com
Using both of the databases, research information on the following topics as they relate to your career:
Basic Info:
1. Job Description—what will you be doing?
2. Salary Range--Median Salary
3. Education Required (college, graduate school, 2-year program, technical school, etc.)
4. What kind of environment will you work in? (office, outside, travel, etc.)
5. Outlook--Is this a growing or shrinking field?
6. Three links to organizations or websites where someone can learn more about the field you've chosen
7. Find a minimum of three companies or institutions where you could work in your chosen career.
You will need to take notes. Later in the week, you will be taught how to add the information you found to your wiki page.
1. Where is the college located?
2. Is there a major or minor that you can use in your career? How long will it take to earn a degree or certification?
3. Total Cost to attend the program
4. Financial Aid--How much does the institution give? Are there scholarships available? Loans? What is the percentage of grants/scholarships vs. loans?
5. After comparing, choose one school. Go to the school's website and research some interesting facts about the school.
Don't forget to take notes!

A couple of notes on editing the wiki:
1. Wikispaces keeps a history of all changes made and saved by users. While we hope nobody would purposefully edit somebody else's page, keep in mind that we can track all changes by username. This means that there will be a record of all of your changes.
2. SAVE, SAVE, SAVE--Think of your edit page as a Word Document. You must continually save your work in order for it to show up on your page.
3. Wikispaces works a lot like a Word Document. Adding text, links and images (files) will be easy.
4. Did I mention you need to save continuously?
Your job today is to transfer the information you have researched about your career into your wikipage. We would also like you to find an image using Google Advanced Image Search. This will help you find copyright free images for use in your wiki. Your image does not have to be of somebody performing the duties of your chosen career, just of something that is related to your chosen career.
To use the Google Advanced Image Search:
Once you have selected an image, loading it to your wiki page is easy:
You can also save the file to your computer and upload it Old School.
By the end of class you should have your Basic Career information, your college information and a copyright free image loaded onto your personal career wikispaces page.
Today you will build a resume. Building a resume helps you to create a career objective and list all of the skills and education you've acquired and that can transfer to a career.
The College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) has a great resume building tool that we will use. If you do not have an account, you will create one today. Your username will be your student number and the password will be goimps.
Here are the steps to creating and saving your resume:
CFNC also has a lot of great information about financial aid, careers, and college planning that you can take time to explore once you have uploaded your resume.
You will begin creating a video about your chosen profession in Animoto today. Your video will need to be 1-3 minutes long. The first thing you will need to do is create an account.
Once you have your account set up it is easy to create a video. Ms. Menzies will walk you through the process.
Here's the one I made for this class:
Day 1:
Your first order of business will be to write down (on a piece of paper) 3 things you think you already know about your career. It may be the salary, education level or anything else you feel like you know before you start your research. Turn this sheet of paper in to Ms. Sutton, Ms. Kalland, or Ms. Menzies. Before deciding on your final career, you'll need to do a little research on what you can expect from those careers.
